Post-acute withdrawal symptoms occur during early sobriety and make it a huge risk factor for relapse. Learning about the symptoms of post-acute withdrawal syndrome, along with implementing healthy coping strategies during sobriety will help make your quit successful!
What is PAWS?
PAWS stands for post-acute withdrawal syndrome. PAWS are symptoms that occur after initial withdrawals and can linger later on in your recovery process and can last for months to years after sobriety if not treated accordingly.
PAWS Symptoms:
There are a number of withdrawal symptoms that have been reported in the months following kratom & opioid detox, including insomnia, anxiety, depression, fatigue, restless legs, irritability, and decreased motivation.
What Causes PAWS?
One's personal dependency on drugs or alcohol can lead to brain chemistry changes. When someone suddenly stops using the substance, the brain no longer has the chemical to trigger neurotransmitters and endorphins to release. The brain must re-adjust to being without the substance, and the brain can take time to adjust.
PAWS Coping Strategies?
The best approach is to take a holistic approach to getting healthy. Eat a well balanced diet with lots of fruit, vegetables, Omega 3 Fats and high protein foods.
Drink lots of water!
Try to get some sort of exercise daily to naturally release endorphins and serotonin.
Supplement properly with QuitK for at least 60 days after your quit!
